Bamenda Development Update: A Vision for Transformation

In a concerted effort to enhance public understanding of infrastructural developments in the region, three prominent officials gathered for a press briefing on Thursday, September 10, 2025. The event, hosted at the Regional Delegation of Public Works, featured John Paul Njosi, the Regional Delegate of Housing and Urban Development (MINDHU), Nfor Cyprain Ngenge, the Regional Delegate of Public Works, and Dr. Njeta Bertrand Ndianji, C2D Coordinator and SPORCAP spokesperson.

Affordable Housing Initiatives

MINDHU's commitment to affordable housing was a focal point of the briefing. John Paul Njosi outlined significant progress, particularly with the Bangshie Low-Cost Housing project, which successfully delivered 50 apartments between 2020 and 2021. He also noted that new housing developments in Ngoketunjia Division have been completed, while ongoing efforts in Wum Municipality and Bamenda II Council are progressing through partnerships with FEICOM and local councils.

“These projects are essential for addressing the housing needs of our expanding population,” Njosi emphasized, calling for sustained collaboration to ensure timely project completion.

#### Enhancing Urban Mobility

Both Njosi and Nfor Cyprain Ngenge highlighted the critical role of roads and drainage systems in urban mobility. The nearly finished tarring of 5.3 kilometers of internal roads at the University of Bamenda, costing CFA 2.04 billion, represents a significant investment. Additionally, the reconstruction of key bridges in flood-prone areas, including the Mile 4 Bridge in Nkwen, is underway to mitigate flooding risks.

Njosi announced that studies are in progress for the construction of 40 kilometers of new roads within Bamenda's three municipal councils, while completed projects like the 1.7-kilometer Welcome to Bamenda–Tradex road illustrate ongoing efforts to improve transportation infrastructure.

Ngenge reassured the community that work on the Urban Crossing segment of the long-awaited Babadjou-Bamenda road project would commence shortly, following the resolution of technical and administrative challenges. “The community’s patience will soon be rewarded,” he stated.

Ring Road and Connectivity Projects

Nfor Cyprain Ngenge also discussed the ambitious Ring Road project, designed to connect multiple divisions including Mezam, Bui, Donga Mantung, and Menchum. Key sections are actively under construction, with contracts issued for additional stretches to ensure comprehensive connectivity across the region.

Bridges remain a priority, with plans to complete ongoing projects and rehabilitate critical structures that have faced abandonment or collapse.

Multifaceted Development Initiatives

Dr. Njeta Bertrand Ndianji shared insights into the French-funded C2D program, which encompasses a wide array of interventions aimed at enhancing urban infrastructure, creating job opportunities, and improving public facilities. Key initiatives include the construction of 11.6 kilometers of durable urban roads, installation of pedestrian bridges in flood-prone areas, and the revitalization of commercial hubs like the Mile 4 Market.

Furthermore, SPORCAP is focused on advancing community recreation through the development of modern sports facilities in various neighborhoods, promoting youth engagement and development.

Engaging the Community

The officials collectively urged the media to raise public awareness of these extensive projects, emphasizing the importance of community involvement. “Many people are unaware of the significant investments being made in their neighborhoods,” Ngenge remarked. “We need the community’s support and feedback to enhance our efforts.”

This briefing highlighted a comprehensive development strategy aimed at transforming Bamenda and the North West region into a more connected, resilient, and economically vibrant area, despite the ongoing challenges. The collaboration between government entities and the community is poised to play a crucial role in achieving these ambitious goals.
